In short
Stone carpet is a decorative outdoor floor in which 2–8 mm natural gravel, marble granules or coloured quartz are bound in a clear, UV-stable resin and laid 8–15 mm thick, letting water pass straight through while staying slip resistant. It suits villa gardens, terraces, balconies, poolsides, footpaths, communal areas, café gardens and car park entrances — anywhere exposed to rain, sun and foot traffic.

What is it?
What is Stone Carpet Flooring?
Stone carpet flooring binds natural or engineered stone — gravel, marble granules or coloured quartz — in a clear polyurethane resin to create a permeable, slip-resistant and attractive surface.
Stone carpet is both a decorative and a functional flooring solution: coloured natural or synthetic stone is blended with a two-component UV-stable resin and laid on the substrate. Because it is permeable, rainwater drains away instead of pooling — a real advantage on garden paths, terraces and parking areas. The aggregate surface gives R11–R12 slip resistance, so it stays safe even when wet. With a wide range of colours and stone sizes to suit any design, stone carpet has become the default surface for villas, hotels, poolsides and recreational areas. Zeminsan Epoksi guarantees long-lasting and visually striking results with quality resin systems and an experienced team.
This system is part of the Epoxy Floor Coating family; you can compare it with the others in the table below.
System Types and Variants
- Permeable (open-pore) stone carpet
- Outdoors; water drains away rather than pooling.
- Closed-pore stone carpet
- Interiors and balconies; easier to clean.
- Fine grade (2–4 mm)
- Balconies, terraces and interiors; an almost smooth texture.
- Coarse grade (4–8 mm)
- Garden paths, car parks and areas where slip resistance comes first.
How Is It Applied? The Stages
- 1. Substrate preparation and fallsThe concrete is cleaned and any loose material removed; a 1–2% fall and the drainage are checked.
- 2. PrimerA primer that bonds the concrete to the resin.
- 3. Stone and resin blendStone of the chosen colour and size is mixed with clear resin.
- 4. Laying and compactingThe blend is trowelled out and compacted to the required thickness, contained by edge profiles.
- 5. Sealer (optional)A protective top layer; reduces soiling and deepens the colour.
- 6. CuringFoot traffic after 24–48 hours, vehicles after 72 hours.
Technical Specifications
Where It Is Used
- Villa and residential garden paths
- Poolsides and terraces
- Parking areas and garage entrances
- Shopping centre open areas
- Hotel and residence landscaping
- Sports and recreation facilities
Advantages
- 01 High water permeability — no standing water
- 02 Wide choice of colour and stone size
- 03 R11–R12 slip resistance
- 04 UV-stable resin with no yellowing
- 05 Easy maintenance and pressure-washable
Drawbacks and Limitations
- The open-pore structure can trap soil and leaf litter; periodic pressure washing is needed.
- It is not suitable for heavy vehicle traffic or point loads.
- A poor-quality resin will yellow under UV; an aliphatic UV-stable resin is essential.
- If the falls and drainage of the concrete beneath are poor, water will still pool regardless of the surface.
When Should You Choose It?
Choose it when
- Gardens, terraces and pool surrounds where standing water is unacceptable
- Slip-resistant surfaces that are comfortable underfoot (pools, spas)
- A natural stone appearance combined with a seamless, modern design
Consider another system
- Indoor car parks and heavy vehicle areas → textured epoxy
- A smooth, hygienic indoor surface → self-leveling
- On dead-flat, undrained slabs the falls and drainage must be resolved first
Epoxy Flooring Systems Compared
| System | Thickness | Service life | Traffic | Slip resistance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Epoxy Paint / Coating | 0.3 – 0.6 mm | 5 – 8 years | Light – medium | Smooth (R9–R10 with additive) | Garages, warehouses, workshops, dust-proofing |
| Self-Leveling Epoxy | 2 – 3 mm | 10 – 15 years | Medium – heavy foot, light vehicle | Smooth (R9–R10 with additive) | Hospitals, offices, food plants, retail |
| Textured (Multilayer) | 4 – 8 mm | 15 – 20 years | Heavy — forklift, truck | R11 – R12 | Factories, warehouses, ramps, wet areas |
| Epoxy Mortar | 4 – 9+ mm | 15 – 25 years | Very heavy, impact | R10 – R12 (texture dependent) | Food/chemical plants, concrete repair |
| Anti-Static / ESD Epoxy | 2 – 3 mm | 10 – 15 years | Medium | Smooth | Electronics, data centres, operating theatres |
| Metallic Epoxy | 2 – 3 mm | 8 – 12 years | Foot, light commercial | Smooth (gloss) | Showrooms, lobbies, villas, cafés |
| Stone Carpet | 8 – 15 mm | 8 – 12 years | Foot, light vehicle | R11 – R12 | Outdoors: gardens, terraces, poolsides |
Alternative Systems
- Textured epoxy with UV top coat
- For outdoor areas and ramps with vehicle traffic.
- Natural stone paving
- A classic appearance; jointed and slower to install.
- Rubber / EPDM surfacing
- For children's play areas and anywhere impact absorption is required.
What Drives the Price
- Stone type and size (gravel / marble / quartz)
- Thickness (8 / 12 / 15 mm)
- Resin quality (UV-stable aliphatic polyurethane)
- Substrate preparation and correction of falls
- Size of the area and edge detailing
